It is worth remembering that Paolo Friere insisted, several decades ago, in Brazil, that education takes place in living spaces.........the street corner, the house, the cafe, the library, the field, and so on.
He argued that teachers should devise the 'pedagogy of the oppressed', whereby children, parents, local communities, are involved in a dialogue with the teachers to identify the most effective education for them all.
Ivan Illich wanted to deschool society. Friere and Illich both declared that 'education' has little to do with schools, and nothing to do with certificates and tests. Learning involves problem solving, projects, investigation, critical analysis, dialogues, interaction, and activity and praxis.
It would be much easier if the teachers moved to where the learners lived, setting up learning communities in the neighbourhood.
Friere, Illich, Dewey, Bourdieu all declared that learning is educational liberation, not control! It is community education.
